About Pathway to Recovery

Since 1989, Pathway to Recovery has provided income-based recovery-first housing for Indiana individuals and families.

Serving approximately 150 Hoosiers each year, our entry-level stabilization, semi-independent, and permanent housing integrates substance use recovery and mental health support.

Guided by peer mentors, we help residents achieve lasting sobriety, self-sufficiency, financial independence, and even home ownership.

We operate as the only multi-tiered substance-free housing program in Indianapolis that welcomes graduates from every recovery program across the state.

By never turning anyone away from our entry-level housing for lack of funds, we help struggling Hoosiers build a stable foundation before transitioning to rent-paying housing.

Our Mission

We help homeless Hoosiers overcome substance use and mental health barriers to become substance-free, stable, self-sufficient individuals.

Our multi-tiered, income-based housing model empowers residents to build long-term recovery within a tight-knit community.

Pathway and its residents thrive in a peer-driven model, creating a complete housing continuum of care under one organizational umbrella.

Our Vision

Pathway to Recovery strives to be Indiana’s leading provider of recovery housing and integrated mental health support for individuals facing homelessness and substance use barriers.

Through collaborative partnerships and a full continuum of care, we help people achieve lasting recovery, stable housing, improved well-being, and opportunities for a productive, independent future.

Why Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery Must Be Treated Together

Mental health, substance use, and housing are closely connected. Many people use drugs or alcohol to cope with trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health challenges. As addiction grows, it often leads to job loss, damaged relationships, financial hardship, and eventually homelessness. Without safe and stable housing, recovery becomes much harder.

Nearly half of people with a substance use disorder also have a mental health condition. Treating only one while ignoring the others often leads to repeated crises instead of lasting recovery.

At Pathway to Recovery, we believe recovery starts by treating the whole person. We combine recovery support, stable housing, mental health services, employment, and peer support to help people rebuild their lives. Our goal is not just sobriety. It is lasting independence, stable housing, and becoming a productive member of the community.

Today, Pathway combines:

Seven structured recovery-first living environments

Peer-led recovery support

Entry-level stabilization, semi-independent, and permanent housing

Mental health resources and referrals

Employment and workforce development support

Community connection and accountability

Holistic healing activities for the broader recovery community
